about

This sound art composition accompanies an installation with artist Quincy Owens of three light sculptures in Marion, Iowa. It was composed using sounds recorded in the Marion community as well as bird sounds of the species present in a mural at the site by artist Cecilia Lueza. An old bell, a street grate, cicadas, the espresso machine at the local coffee shop, pedestrian crosswalk alert beeps, and children playing in the park were among the samples used. The source audio was then manipulated to give it a new identity to use as a creative sound sculpting tool.

This site-specific installation is part of the ImagineArt in the Alleys project funded by an ArtPlace America Grant. The sculptures are 9', 10', and 11' tall respectively and approximately 1'W x 1'D. The sound art is accessible via QR code signage on site.
